FAQ

General Information

  • Is there a captain on board? Yes, all charters include a professional captain, booked separately, to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
  • Where do we cruise? The route is flexible and based on your preferences and the day’s weather conditions. Popular options include cruising along Chicago’s iconic skyline, exploring the open waters of Lake Michigan and of course swimming in the infamous Playpen.
  • Can we visit the Chicago River during our charter? Absolutely! Many guests enjoy cruising through the Chicago River to take in the city’s stunning architecture. However, it’s important to note that traveling through the Chicago Locks to access the river can take up to an hour each way, particularly on high-traffic days like Friday and Saturday afternoons. This transit time can significantly impact your charter duration. To ensure you have enough time to enjoy your river cruise, please let both the Main Event Charters team and your captain know in advance if you plan to include the Chicago River in your itinerary.
  • What is the boat’s maximum capacity? Our boats can accommodate up to 10 passengers for safety and comfort. However, we recommend a maximum of 8 guests for the most enjoyable experience.
  • Where are you located? Our boats are docked at Diversey Harbor in Chicago. Detailed directions and parking information will be provided upon booking.
  • How do I book a charter? To view availability and book online, please visit our Booking Page. For special requests, feel free to contact us via phone or email.
  • What is a “bareboat” charter? A bareboat charter is an arrangement where you, as the charterer, take temporary ownership of the vessel during the charter period. This means you’re responsible for selecting a qualified captain, providing your own supplies such as food and drinks, and ensuring the safety of all passengers.
  • What happens in case of bad weather? Weather decisions are made with safety as the top priority. If unsafe weather conditions occur, we will work with you to reschedule or offer a refund. *Please keep in mind somedays the sun may be shining, it doesn’t always mean the lake is calm or the waves are gentle. At Main Event Charters, your safety is our top priority, and Lake Michigan, like all of us, can have its unpredictable moments.
  • Are tie-up with other boats allowed? Main Event Charters does NOT allow tie-ups while under charter. Following USCG bareboat charter guidelines, tie-ups can lead to illegal charter activity and may result in guests unknowingly exceeding the 12-passenger capacity limit, compromising safety and compliance.
  • How old do I need to be to rent and charter a boat with Main Event Charters?
You must be at least 21 years old to rent and charter a boat as the “Charterer.”
  • Is there an age requirement for passengers?
No, there is no age requirement for passengers of the Charterer.
  • Are infants and children allowed on board? Yes, children are welcome on board. Please inform us in advance if any children will be joining, so we can ensure appropriately sized life jackets are available. Children 13 and under will have to have a life jacket on at all times

Payment and Policies

  • How much do I need to pay to reserve the boat? A 25% deposit secures your booking. The remaining balance is due 30 days before your scheduled charter. For bookings made within 30 days, full payment is required at the time of reservation.
  • What types of payment do you accept? We accept all major credit cards (additional 3%-5% processing fee) but Cash, Zelle, and Venmo are preferred. Payments for the hired captain are handled directly between you and the captain, as they are independent contractors. Most captains accept Cash, Zelle and Venmo.
  • Why do I need to hire a captain? U.S. Coast Guard regulations require that a licensed captain operate the vessel. While we provide and recommend a list of qualified captains who are very familiar with our vessel and experienced in operating it, you are free to hire any licensed professional. Budget $100–$125 per hour for captain fees, plus gratuity.
  • Can I make last-minute changes to my booking? We’ll do our best to accommodate changes, but please note that last-minute adjustments may not always be possible. Contact us directly to discuss your needs.

  • What kind of shoes should we wear? We recommend wearing soft-soled, non-marking shoes like deck shoes or sneakers with light-colored soles. High heels are not permitted as they can damage the deck.
  • What should we bring on board? Consider bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, snacks, drinks, and an extra layer of clothing, especially for evening charters. We provide essentials such as bottled water, ice, paper goods, and coolers.
  • Do you offer inflatables for swimming? Yes, we provide a complimentary Lilly Pad for swimming fun. If you’d like to bring your own inflatables, that’s also an option.
